Artist Statement
I envision myself as a builder. Everything needs a beginning, a start. Once that’s established, a process begins. Adding on, layering, molding, piece by piece, a collection of ideas come together to eventually make a whole.
I enjoy the blending of the physical and the metaphysical aspects of my work. The gathering of tools and materials, the thoughts, the cutting and placement of fabrics, the dreams and visions, the stitching and sewing together of the pieces….. Combining to create a process that finally evolves into a finished statement of my own creation.
This making and creating of art is an essential part of my life and who I am.
I am a fiber artist.
The sensuality, textures and variety of this medium are the base that drives my imagery and make it come to life. No other medium has captured my imagination and fit so perfectly into my own personal expression of art.
It has taken me years of quilt making to reach this point of being able to fully express ideas, my observations, and myself in a satisfactory way. A progression can be seen after a start with abstract ideas and a concentration on color, patterns, and design. After getting a feel for the fabrics and then developing my own personal technique, I felt confident to move on to the human figure. I worked on a series of nudes that dealt with the use of body language to express self-doubt and the struggles associated with the reclusive yet showmanship nature of being an artist. I wanted them to communicate without words.
My imagery expanded as I took a more detailed look into the makeup of the individual and their coexistence within contemporary family life. Freeze frame dramas concerning age, gender, motherhood, and the varied circumstances that shape and mold our lives. These quilts are made to draw the viewer in and question the roles and responsibilities that we all endure.
I work on these " Art Quilts " during the day while my evenings are spent hooking rugs. Between the two mediums I have achieved a perfect balance of art and craft. My rugs are functional and are made with the freedom of expression and design that craft allow. My goal is to make a beautiful rug, something that someone could design a room around: plush, durable and with a sense of style to give others as much pleasure viewing as I have achieved creating.
